Top 4 Podcasts that give me LIFE!

Podcast Main.png

Not sure how many of you have adopted the enjoyment of listening to podcasts but Im somewhat of a newbie to this space and must say I LOVE it! I started several years ago with the SERIAL* franchise Podcast – an investigative story format. It was the first season of this podcast and their first storyline was a popular cold case that was close to home for me – the story of a teenage girls’ murder in suburban Maryland back in the late 90’s. I remember not being able to stop listening, bingeing each episode (that was at least 45min to an hour+). It got so bad that I ended up putting others onto it and we would listen together when possible. Obsessed? That was an understatement. I marveled at the idea of using my own imagination to draw the scenes being described and inserting myself where the real life characters were mentally. Anywho, this was my first taste of this podcast thing.

That was back in 2014, NOW my interest in podcasts is to supplement my time-starved life and not being able to socially connect with my friends, mommy-friends and other like-minded women as often as Id like to. Don’t get me wrong, all of my group chats are poppin LOL! We laugh a ton, share “tea” and memes that help us get through the day, but topics like relationship challenges, mood changes and motivation you kinda need to be tuned in for that connection. This coupled with not having a ton on quiet time to sit and read, I can tune into my podcasts while driving, in my office during the day or while Im at the nail salon.

SO, I wanted to share my top 4 podcasts subscriptions Im sticking with in 2019. These regular posted discussions keep me going with reflection, personal accountability, laughter and overall positivity – not to mention they all possess black girl magic!

Listed in no particular order, these are my recommendations!

1.      Myleik Teeles’ Podcast

Myleik is an entrepreneur and owner of CurlBox, the uber successful beauty subscription box; but what I personally LOVE about Myleik is that her success is not just illustrated by her product focused brand. Her consciousness and maturity about life, self –awareness and being authentically herself is so infectious. I’m telling you, she’s an amazing role model for our generation and definitely the big sister I never had (in my head LOL).  Her coined signature is #MyTaughtYou (how fitting) – look up the hashtag on IG or twitter for some serious GEMS.

Favorite Episode: The Silent Treatment

2.      Therapy for Black Girls

Dr. Joy Harden Bradford is a licensed Psychologist that created and hosts this podcast which aims to be an information hub about all things mental health, personal development and growth.  Aside from the fact that she’s actually educated and experienced in her field I enjoy listening to her because I always walk away with a new perspective on an issue or topic. My brain capacity these days is limited therefore it’s about quality intake; we all have messages that intercept, some good and some bad so I try and fill my exposure with positivity.

NOTE: Dr. Harden Bradford provides a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode that her podcast should not be used as a substitute for a relationship with a licensed professional, which I think is responsible and TRUE.

Favorite Episode: Unpacking Toxic Masculinity

3.      The University of Real Life with Dr. Temi

TURLDT is a newly launched podcast that is so creatively titled after my dear friend and Sorority Sister, Dr. Temi Aregbesola-Okere. Temi has her Ph. D in Public Health which provides her listeners a wide range of topics that shes knowledgeable on; but if you know her you know she is a social butterfly to a “T”. Temi juggles so much and does so much for her village it amazes me. She founded and runs a non-profit organization; is a mother of two, Wife, active in her Nigerian community and doubles as an Emcee! So you can understand why launching a platform to share with the world is absolutely timely for her. Check her out as she explores the human pursuit of happiness and everything in between! “School is officially in session!”

Favorite Episode: The Mommy Hood – Featuring me! Talking about all things motherhood, my blog Mama Got da Sauce and my greatest mommy moment to date.

4.      Schoolin’ Life

This girlfriend-centric podcast is not just about pop culture and affordable fashion, the duo Ashley +Marcy unpack issues of valuable substance too!  I’ll continue by saying that these two ladies have the best energy; I love listening to them on my work trips, on a flight or when Im shopping.  They seem down to earth and passionate about their subject matters.

I just started tuning into this podcast and it was just in time for a helpful topic, finances. February was personal finance month and each week Ashley +Marcy along with a featured guest honed in on things that our generation rarely discusses;  including frugality -but how to still live your best life, debt impact on the everyday and developing good financial goals.

I have to get caught up on some of their older episodes but I love what I’ve heard so far.

Favorite Episode so far: Frugal & Fabulous

*Serial is a podcast from the creators of This American Life, hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial tells one story — a true story — over the course of a season.

Id love to hear what some of your favorite podcasts are! If you’re not into them, what are your outlets and resources for motivation? Reading? Music?
